Abdominal fat
Concentration of excess weight in the abdominal area. A waist measurement of more than 88 cm in women and 102 cm in men is associated with higher risk for hypertension.

Aorta
The largest artery, connected to the left ventricle of the heart; the main channel for blood flowing to the body.

Atherosclerosis
A condition in which fatty deposits accumulate in and under the lining of artery walls.

Arteriosclerosis
Hardening of the arteries.

Aneurysm
A bulge in the artery wall due to lack of elasticity and weakness.

ACE Inhibitors
Blood pressure drugs that work by preventing the production of Angiotensine II, which narrows the blood vessels.

Adrenaline
A hormone released in moments of stress, which causes a narrowing of blood vessels and rapid heartbeats.

Alpha Blockers
Blood pressure drugs that work by reducing the effect of the hormone norepinephrine, thus preventing the narrowing of artery walls.

Arteries
The blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to all parts of the body. Arteries are lined with smooth muscles, which enable them to expand and contract. When arteries are elastic, they are less resistant to the flow of blood.

Beta Blockers
Blood pressure drugs that work by blocking the effect of adrenaline, which constricts the blood vessels.

Body Mass Index (BMI)
A formula for calculating the percentage of fat in your body.
