Calcium
An element found to be deficient in many hypertensive patients. High levels of calcium are present especially in low-fat dairy products. It should be noted, that calcium supplements seem to be less effective in treating hypertension than calcium obtained from food.

Calcium Antagonists
Blood pressure drugs that block the calcium channels in the artery walls' muscle cells, which helps the arteries stay relaxed.

Cardiovascular Exercise
Physical activity that improves the heart and lung capacity (also called aerobic activity).

Cardiovascular System
The system responsible for the circulation of blood through the heart and blood vessels.

Central Acting Agents
Blood pressure drugs that prevent the brain from sending the nervous system signals to narrow blood vessels and speed heart rate.

Cholesterol
A substance in the blood, some types of which promote the development of arterial plaque. It should be noted, that not all forms of cholesterol are harmful – watch out for the LDL readings.

Chronic Low Blood Pressure
Blood pressure that is below normal, but not hazardous. May cause dizziness or fainting.

Coarctation of the Aorta
Narrowing of the aorta, usually in the chest, causing high blood pressure in the arms and low blood pressure in the legs.

DASH Diet
An eating plan rich in grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, shown to lower blood pressure.

Deep Breathing
A relaxing breathing technique, which according to studies may lower blood pressure.

Diastolic Blood Pressure
The blood pressure measured in the arteries between heartbeats - when the heart relaxes.

Direct Vasodilators
Blood pressure drugs that prevent the tightening of the muscles in the artery walls.

Diuretics
Blood pressure drugs that reduce the volume of water in the body.
