Beta-Blockers

This group of medications has been used for the treatment of hypertension for many years, and has been proven useful in 50% of the cases.

Beta-blockers block the effects of the hormone adrenaline, reducing rapid heartbeat and constriction of blood vessels. They are known to be effective for elderly people who suffer from a heart condition.

Beta-blockers also reduce the release of renin in the kidneys, leading to a reduction of angiotensin - a substance that contributes to the narrowing of blood vessels.

There are two main types of beta-blockers: those which affect the heart, and those which affect the heart and blood vessels.

Acebutolol
Atenolol
Betaxolol
Bisoprolol
Carvedilol
Blocadren (Timolol)

Beta blockers' side effects

Beta-blockers frequently have side-effects, more than other blood pressure medications.

Fatigue - this is the most common side-effect, leading to difficulties with any type of strenuous physical activity.
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Impotence
Sleeping disorders
Cold hands and feet
Edema (swelling of ankles, feet, or legs)

If you suffer from any of these side effects consult your doctor, who might want to try and change your dosage.

Because of these side effects, beta-blockers are not the drug of choice for young and active people.
