Beta-BlockersThis group of medications has been used for the treatment of hypertension for many years, and has been proven useful in 50% of the cases. Beta-blockers block the effects of the hormone adrenaline, reducing rapid heartbeat and constriction of blood vessels. They are known to be effective for elderly people who suffer from a heart condition. Beta-blockers also reduce the release of renin in the kidneys, leading to a reduction of angiotensin - a substance that contributes to the narrowing of blood vessels.
